Welcome to Department of Educational Foundations
It is my privilege to welcome all students, staff and distinguished visitors to the Department of Educational Foundations. Since its establishment in 1975, the Department has remained steadfast in its pursuit of academic excellence, rigorous scholarship and the professional advancement of teachers. Our programmes are anchored in the core disciplines of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, Measurement and Evaluation, Sociology of Education, Philosophy of Education, Comparative Education and Special Education.
With a committed faculty and well-equipped facilities, including a counselling clinic, resource and assessment units and specialized laboratories, we are dedicated to providing a balanced blend of theoretical instruction and practical training essential for effective practice in the educational field. Students are encouraged to engage fully in departmental academic activities, including seminars and other scholarly forums designed to enhance intellectual development and promote professional competence.

Our Mission
To provide high-quality education, training, and research in Guidance and Counselling, Special Education, Educational Psychology, Sociology of Education, Philosophy of Education, and Comparative Education. The Department is committed to creating a supportive and well-resourced learning environment, promoting scholarly engagement through seminars and research, and preparing teachers and researchers who are ethical, reflective, and capable of addressing contemporary educational challenges.
About the Department
Establishment of the Department
The Department of Educational Foundations was established alongside Educational Psychology in 1975. At its inception, the Department consisted of Educational Psychology with specializations in Measurement and Evaluation as well as Guidance and Counselling. Over time, the Department expanded to include academic staff specializing in Sociology of Education, Philosophy of Education, Comparative Education and Special Education. Initially, the only specialist degree offered at the undergraduate level was the B.A. (Ed.) Guidance and Counselling. The Department has since introduced a B. (Ed.) degree in Special Education, admitting its first set of students in the 2023/2024 academic session.
Academic Programmes and Training
Specialist students in Guidance and Counselling, along with other students in the faculty, are exposed to foundational courses in Educational Psychology, Measurement and Evaluation, Sociology of Education, Comparative Education and Philosophy of Education. Similarly, specialist students in Special Education take core courses in Special Education as well as foundational courses in Educational Psychology and Measurement and Evaluation.
Facilities and Learning Resources
The Department of Educational Foundations operates a Counselling Clinic that provides educational, vocational and personal–social counselling to students, staff and other clients. The clinic also serves as a training centre for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. In addition, the Department has a well-equipped resource room, assessment clinic and laboratory for the Special Education units, with facilities made available to students, staff and clients.
Publications
The Department publishes a scholarly journal titled the International Journal of Educational Research (IJER). The journal is released twice a year and contains articles intended to keep both staff and students well informed.
Seminars and Academic Engagements
Departmental seminars are held every Tuesday. Graduate students are required to attend all seminars or conferences organized by the Department.
Student Associations
Students in the faculty may join various university-approved associations such as the Nigerian Universities Education Students’ Association (NUESA), the Students Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria (SAPROCON), the Educational Foundations Students’ Association (EFSA) and the National Association of Special Education Students (NASES).
