Head of Department - Prof. Adesoji Adeolu Oni
Prof. A. A. Oni Head, Department of Educational Foundations Faculty of Education, University of Lagos Profile Prof. A. A. Oni is a distinguished scholar in the field of Sociology of Education and a leading academic voice on social issues affecting educational systems in Nigeria and beyond. Born in August 1968, he has built a career defined by excellence in teaching, research and academic leadership. He was appointed Head of the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, in August 2024.
Education Prof. Oni obtained his first degree in English Studies Education from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). He proceeded to the University of Ibadan, where he earned both his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Sociology of Education. His doctoral thesis received the award for the Best Thesis in the Faculty of Education. He is also a Fulbright Fellow, one of the most prestigious academic fellowships in the United States. Teaching and Research A dedicated educator, Prof. Oni teaches Sociology of Education, Philosophy of Education and Comparative Education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
His research interests include: Social problems in education, Social change and educational development, Teacher education, Social deviance and disorganization, with a special focus on student cultism in Nigerian universities His extensive research output has made significant contributions to understanding the social dynamics within educational institutions. Publications and Editorial Work Prof. Oni has published widely in national and international peer-reviewed journals. His works have appeared in scholarly outlets across several countries, including the United States, India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Ghana, Malaysia, France, Japan, Botswana, Switzerland, Côte d’Ivoire, the Philippines, Bulgaria, Turkey, the Netherlands, Senegal, South Korea, Poland, Tanzania and Canada.
He also serves on the editorial boards of not less than 15 academic journals. Awards and Recognition In May 2013, Prof. Oni received the Educational Research in Africa Award (ERAA) under the Korea Trust Fund (KOAFEC) as the Best Accomplished African Educational Researcher for 2011–2012. The award, presented at the International Centre for Education in Paris, France, recognizes excellence in educational research across Africa. He previously received the prestigious Fulbright Award during his doctoral studies and was honoured for producing the Best Thesis in his faculty. Service and Leadership Prof. Oni is known for his unwavering commitment to teaching, research and community service. He maintains a strong presence in the classroom, mentors students at all levels and consistently pursues research that addresses critical social challenges. His leadership continues to drive innovation and academic excellence within the Department of Educational Foundations. Personal Life Prof. A. A. Oni is married and blessed with children. He remains dedicated to advancing knowledge, promoting scholarship and contributing to the development of the University of Lagos.
