About the Department

The Department of Arts Education has a longstanding tradition of academic excellence and institutional innovation. It began as the Department of Curriculum Studies, “serving as the foundational hub where teachers for all secondary school subjects were trained.” Over time, as educational demands evolved, the department underwent strategic restructuring. The initial split created the Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education (ASSE), separating science-related disciplines. A subsequent reorganization produced the present Department of Arts Education, now fully dedicated to arts-based teacher education and professional development and committed to advancing excellence in humanities education.

The Department is a dynamic academic hub within the Faculty of Education, University of Lagos. As a leading institution for humanities-focused teacher education, we prepare specialists who combine strong disciplinary knowledge with advanced pedagogical competence. Positioned at the intersection of culture, ethics, and history, the department develops educators who serve as custodians of intellectual and cultural heritage as well as future-oriented innovation.

We view teaching as an evolving, creative practice. Our philosophy emphasizes innovative pedagogy and the strategic integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in language and humanities education. Through e-pedagogy, blended learning, and communicative teaching approaches, we equip students for effective practice in contemporary, technology-driven classrooms.

The department comprises three specialized units offering Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A. Ed.), Master of Education (M.Ed.) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. These include:

  • Languages Unit: Focused on linguistic proficiency, literary analysis, and instructional methodology across English, French, Yoruba, and Igbo. The unit prepares bilingual and multilingual educators capable of navigating global communication demands.
  • Religious Studies Unit: Provides professional training in Christian Religious Studies (CRS) and Islamic Studies (ISS), emphasizing pedagogies that support moral, ethical, and spiritual development in diverse societies.
  • History Unit: Develops students’ analytical and critical thinking skills, enabling them to interpret human heritage and historical events through an educational lens.
