The Educational Foundations Department

The old Federal Advanced Teachers’ College in Akoka became a Faculty of Education in the University of Lagos in early 1970s. Then the Department of Educational Foundations was established with Educational Psychology in 1975. The Department at its inception consisted of Educational Psychology with specialization in Measurement and Evaluation and Guidance and Counselling. Subsequently, the Department included academic staff that specialized in the fields of Sociology, Philosophy of Education, Comparative Education and Special Education. Guidance and Counselling as a sub-discipline has been prominent in the Department. At inception, the only specialist degree awarded in the Department at undergraduate level is B.A (Ed) Guidance and Counselling. However, the Department now offers a B.Ed. degree in Special Education, with her first admitted students in the 2023/2024 academic session.

The specialist students in Guidance and Counselling as well as other students in the Faculty are exposed to foundation courses in Educational Psychology, Measurement and Evaluation, Sociology of Education, Comparative Education and Philosophy of Education to ensure that they turn out as capable Guidance Counsellors and teachers respectively. Likewise, specialist students in Special Education are exposed to courses in Special Education as well as foundation courses in Educational Psychology, Measurement and Evaluation to ensure that they turn out as well-trained Special needs Educators.

Courses leading to Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Educational Psychology, Measurement and Evaluation, Guidance and Counselling, Sociology of Education, Comparative Education and Philosophy of Education are offered in this Department. It is gratifying to note that some of the early graduates of the Department are now full-fledged academic staff members in the Department.
