General Overview

Building the Foundation for a Brighter Future Through Education

History of the Faculty

The Faculty of Education was established in the University of Lagos in 1964, two years after the University itself was founded. In accordance with the report of the Advisory Commission of UNESCO which prepared the initial plans for the University of Lagos, the original Faculty of Education was merged in 1967 with the Federal Advanced Teachers’ College which had been opened on a site of the University with financial and manpower support from the United State Agency for International Development (USAID).

As a result of the merger, a College of Education was established in line with the general collegiate structure of the University at the time. Both professional education disciplines and content teaching subjects were taught within the College for the National Certificate of Education and Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (Education) Degrees. At the beginning of the 1975/76 session, the College of Education was restructured into the Faculty of Education.

The faculty started with the following Departments:

  • Adult Education
  • Curriculum Studies
  • Educational Foundations
  • Educational Administration
  • Human Kinetic and Health Education

Dean’s Message

Dear Educational Community,
As the current steward of the faculty's rich legacy that spans nearly six decades, I am honored to build upon the foundation laid by our distinguished predecessors, beginning with Professor Emeritus C. O. Taiwo in 1964. Our faculty stands as a testament to educational excellence and innovation. From our origins as part of the UNESCO-advised merger with the Federal Advanced Teachers' College to our current status as a comprehensive faculty, we have consistently evolved to meet the changing needs of Nigeria's educational sector. Today, we remain committed to our core objectives of preparing professional graduate teachers, developing high-caliber educational leaders, and promoting excellence through practical teaching experience. Our faculty continues to uphold the philosophy of functional education for productive work, ensuring our graduates are fully equipped to make meaningful contributions to education at all levels.
