Personal Statement
Professor Adeola Funmilola Afonja is a distinguished Professor of Manpower Training and Development Education in the Department of Adult Education at the University of Lagos. She obtained her Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree in Adult Education/History from the University of Ibadan in 1985. She subsequently earned a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Adult Education from the same institution in 1987 and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Adult Education from the University of Lagos in 2004, specialising in Workers Education and Continuing Education. Professor Afonja has made significant contributions to academic administration within the University of Lagos. She served on the Board of the School of Postgraduate Studies from 2013 to 2022, participating in various committees and as a member of the Senate, she is contributing to policy and administration. She has also served on numerous Faculty of Education committees. Her leadership roles include serving as Chairman of the Teaching Practice Committee of the Faculty of Education, Chairman of the Staff Welfare Committee (2018, 2022), Member of the Students Welfare Committee (2014, 2019), Member of the Accreditation Committee, and Acting Sub-Dean of Postgraduate Studies. Beyond the university, Professor Afonja has served as a Collation Officer for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). She is an active member of several professional bodies, including the National Council for Adult Education (NNCAE), the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE), and the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). She was also a Fellow in the Department of Adult Education and Comparative Studies at the University of Wurzburg, Germany. A prolific scholar, Professor Afonja has published extensively in reputable local and international journals, with research interests spanning Manpower Training and Development Education, Continuing Education, and Workers Education. She has successfully supervised more than five doctoral candidates and continues to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in her field. As an education consultant and adviser, she serves on the boards of several secondary schools and provides consultancy services through TOTAD Educational Services. She is also a member of several editorial boards and currently serves as Editor of the Journal of Educational Thought (JET), a biannual publication of the Department of Adult Education. In 2024, Professor Afonja served as a mentor under the Women in Higher Education Support Hub (WHESH), a British Council-funded initiative aimed at promoting leadership and professional development among women in higher education. She served as Chairman of the Accreditation Team to Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo State, and acts as an External Examiner for various universities across Nigeria.
